Washington: Hamilton has shown class
PHOENIX -- American League manager Ron Washington was asked how his outfielder, Josh Hamilton, was dealing with the emotions surrounding a tough weekend in which Rangers fan Shannon Stone passed away. The fan fell over a left-field rail and dropped 20 feet trying to reach a ball thrown by Hamilton.
"Josh has handled everything with class," Washington said during the news conference to announce the lineups for Tuesday's All-Star Game. "As an athlete, a baseball player, when you have things that are affecting you off the field, you can't wait to get on the field. You can focus on what you need to focus on and not focus on something that can be distracting.
"Hamilton and the Texas Rangers organization has handled everything the last few days with a lot of class. Hamilton is fine. He's learned how to balance things and learned how to separate. Those things come from being in the fire and gaining experience. He's getting to the point where he's an elite athlete and also an elite person."
