Rangers Magazine: Keith Law
|ESPN MLB analyst Keith Law shares his thoughts on the Rangers' Chris Davis, along with prospects Leonys Martin and Martin Perez.
“To rush him to the big leagues at this point I don’t think would do him any good. I don’t think it would do the Rangers any good as well,” Law said of the Cuban defector who is playing in the outfield at Triple-A Round Rock. “He could help the big league club right now in a reserve role if there was no eye to developing this guy long term as an everyday player. You can bring him up and use him off the bench—late inning defensive replacement, pinch-runner type. And, maybe they decide to do that in September once the minor league season is over. If I’m the Rangers, I’m looking long term with this guy.”
Perez, a 20-year-old lefty, has matured on the mound and made the mid-season jump from Double-A Frisco to Triple-A Round Rock. He began this season as the Rangers top prospect according to ESPN, Baseball America, and Baseball Prospectus. What’s next for him?
“He could help the club on a spot start basis later this year. I wouldn’t expect him to be much of a contributor to their big league rotation right away, but I would expect him to show up in their rotation at some point next season and to kind of work his way up to be a number one or number two starter over the next five-six years.”
In addition to the scouting report on Perez and Martin, Law shared the scouting report on Chris Davis, the weaknesses (if any) in the Rangers minor league system, his experience in a major league front office in the days leading up to the trade deadline, and stats you should know when it comes to projecting the talents of a prospect.
