Rangers nominate Michael Young for Clemente Award
Young and his wife, Cristina Barbosa, recently created the Michael Young Family Foundation, which supports the involvement of children’s health in all areas: physical social, mental, and educational. The Foundation held its first event, a celebrity bowling tournament, on Sept. 11 benefiting Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer (WOKC).
“I have always felt that it was very important to give back to the community,” Young said in a statement. “That’s why Cristina and I are so excited about creating our own Foundation. We now have the ability to take our commitment that much further.”
Young hosts WOKC youngsters for Rangers home games each season and serves as the honorary chair of the organization’s annual golf tournament. In 2006 he began the Young Heroes Program to provide college scholarships to young adults that have overcome their battles with cancer. He also created the Michael Young Family Hispanic Scholarship Program in 2010. He has also been actively involved by donating funds and time to Goodwill of Tarrant County, Trinity River Mission in Dallas, Christ Haven for Children, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Vernon Wells Perfect 10, MLBPA Buses for Baseball and Action Team programs, and the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation.
“The Texas Rangers salute Michael Young for all that he has accomplished in his off the field endeavors,” Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan said in a statement. “His nomination for the 2011 Roberto Clemente Award is a very deserving honor.”
Young will be recognized in an on-field ceremony prior to Wednesday’s game with Cleveland and a contribution will be made in his name to the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation.
