The Rangers now know they'll be facing the Detroit Tigers in the AL Championship Series after Detroit beat the Yankees, 3-2, in Game 5 of the AL Division Series at Yankee Stadium. Game 1 is Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington with Game 2 on Sunday. The Tigers would host Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week with the series shifting back to Texas for Games 6 and 7 if needed.
The Tigers got back-to-back homers from Don Kelly and Delmon Young in the first inning and held on for a 3-2 win. Detroit added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Young and starter Doug Fister gave up one run in five innings.
Yankees starter Ivan Nova was forced to leave the game because of arm stiffness after two innings. The Yankees bullpen, including starter CC Sabathia, held the Tigers to just one run after that (Sabathia gave up the RBI single in the fifth). But New York wasn't able to make the comeback as the Tigers' bullpen came up with the big pitches when needed.
Detroit limited the damage from two one-out, bases-loaded situations. Fister got out of one in the fourth and former Ranger Joaquin Benoit allowed one run on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, but struck out Nick Swisher to end the inning and keep the Tigers in front.
Jose Valverde came in and got the save.
