Holland (1-0, 1.42 ERA in playoffs): The 25-year-old (he turned 25 on Sunday) got the win in Game 2 of the ALDS in Arlington. It was a big one as the Rangers lost Game 1 and needed a win to even the series. ...He allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits with 6 1/3 innings against the Rays in two appearances, including a key 1 1/3 innings of relief in Game 4. Holland allowed all three of his runs in his start, going five innings last weekend. ...Holland was 16-5 in the regular season with a 3.95 ERA. He pitched particularly well in September, going 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA in five starts. ...The Rangers were 19-13 in his 32 starts. ...Holland did not pitch against Detroit this season.

Scherzer (1-0, 1.23 ERA in playoffs): The extra day thanks to Mother Nature probably helps Scherzermore than anyone, since he pitched on Thursday in Game 5 of the ALDS. ...He held the Yankees to no runs on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts in his start against the Yankees in the ALDS. ...Scherzer, 26, had a career-best 15 wins this season. ...Right-handed batters hit .262 off him and lefties hit .281. ...Scherzer was acquired by the Tigers from Arizona for Ian Kennedy and Edwin Jackson in 2009. ...He was 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA with nine runs on 21 hits in 17 innings (three starts) vs. Texas in 2011.

Hitters: Adrian Beltre (4-for-11), Ian Kinsler (4-for-13) and David Murphy (4-for-14) have had success off Scherzer. ...Elvis Andrus (2-for-15), Josh Hamilton (2-for-12) and Mike Napoli (1-for-6) have struggled against him.
