DETROIT -- It might seem strange to choose a catcher that was 1-for-4 in Game 5 and is batting just .095 in the series as the unsung hero of the game. But Alex Avila's home run in the third inning tied the score and gave the Comerica Park crowd a little life.
Until that long ball, C.J. Wilson was breezing through the Tigers' order and the Rangers had a 1-0 lead. The fans were quiet and the entire place had a tired feel to it. But Avila charged them up and the Tigers went on to a big sixth inning a few frames later.
Avila is clearly fatigued and battling through injuries. But he was solid behind the plate and delivered a big hit early.
"We're tough," manager Jim Leyland said when asked about Avila and Delmon Young fighting through ailments. "The Texas team is tough. That's the way it's supposed to be. This is really a great series."
