ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and taking the lead in this do-or-die game for St. Louis. Lance Berkman, batting cleanup after Albert Pujols, crushed a home run to the opposite field with a runner on and the Cardinals lead after one inning, 2-1.

Lewis got leadoff man Rafael Furcal, but surrendered a single to skip Schumaker. Pujols flied out to right and then Berkman, batting from the left side, his stronger side, belted one deep into the bleachers.

The inning ended two batters later with no further damage.
