Will Michael Young garner MVP votes?

The American League MVP will be announced at 1 p.m. today and unlike last season when Josh Hamilton was the runaway favorite -- and landslide winner -- a handful of players are in the running this season.

Will Texas Rangers super-utility man Michael Young, who hit a career-high .338 with a career-best 106 RBIs from the five-hole and cleanup, register on the voters' scorecards? Young served as the club's designated hitter for the first time in his career, but also played extensively at third base during Adrian Beltre's injury and at first base, especially late in the season as Mitch Moreland struggled.

The big issue with Young is that he might not be the MVP on his own team. Catcher-first baseman Mike Napoli, who would have been the World Series MVP had Texas wrapped it up, just might have seized that honor with an amazing post-All-Star Game run.

Still, it will be interesting to see how Young, respected around the league by the voting baseball writers, stands up to a loaded field that includes Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista, Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander, Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and even New York Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson.
