The Milwaukee Brewers have hired Johnny Narron to be the team's new hitting coach. He had been the assistant hitting coach for the Texas Rangers and was also a big component of Josh Hamilton's support system.

"He added real value to the organization in both areas, and we want to thank him for that," general manager Jon Daniels said via email on Monday. "He will be missed, but this is a great opportunity and we wish him well in it.

"We've been in touch with Josh -- before and after the hiring -- and will sit down to discuss the best way to move forward. We're confident we will continue to support Josh and all of our players as needed. In anticipation of losing Johnny, we had some discussion about this, but will be in better position to address that specifically once we’ve all put our heads together."

Narron joins his brother, Jerry, on the Milwaukee coaching staff. Jerry Narron was with the Rangers from 1995-2002 as third base coach and then the final two seasons (he took over early in 2001) as manager.

Johnny Narron was an assistant hitting coach in 2011 and was an important instructor for many Rangers players. He also looked after Hamilton, taking care of his meal money, participating in Bible study with him and helping keep him on the right path as the slugger battles with drug and alcohol addiction.

Narron, who was filling a similar role with Cincinnati when Hamilton was with the Reds, was hired by the Rangers shortly after the trade was made prior to the 2008 season.

Hamilton, who had surgery rceently to repair a sports hernia suffered during the 2011 season, continues to rehab so that he will be ready for spring training in a few months. He has one year remaining on his contract with the Rangers.
