Rangers remain interested in C.J. Wilson
The Rangers continue to keep tabs on left-handed pitcher C.J. Wilson. General manager Jon Daniels said that he spoke with Bob Garber, Wilson's agent, Friday morning and expects the two to get together at some point during the Winter Meetings in Dallas next week.
"I would expect we’ll meet with Bob," Daniels said. "I’ve been in regular contact with him. We haven't been part of the 'Magical Mystery Tour,' but we've spoken on a regular basis. C.J. knows we'd like to have him back. If it works out, both sides have interest in making it happen. But that's the nature of free agency: There are other factors, notably other teams that have interest in him."
Daniels didn't put a timetable on when he thought Wilson would make a decision, but said "we're probably closer to the end than the beginning."
A quick thought: The Rangers want Wilson back, but that will depend on what the market demands. If a team is willing to go the $100 million route on Wilson, he won't be a Ranger. But if that's not what he gets (and I still think he won't get that), there's a chance he could return here. And that would be a big boost to this pitching staff. The guy has thrown more than 200 innings two straight seasons and knows how to pitch in the hot weather at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. That carries some value. Texas won't be trying to sign No. 3 or No. 4 starters this winter. They don't need to with their current rotation. If they make a deal, it will be for a top-end pitcher. Wilson fits that bill.
