Rangers general manager Jon Daniels is always looking to acquire talent, whether that's in the front office or on the field.

So he was pleased on Friday to officially add Tim Purpura to the staff as Senior Director of Player Development. The addition of Purpura means a former GM will be farm director. He has a wealth of experience as a farm director, assistant GM and GM of the Houston Astros. He's also known Nolan Ryan for a long time, hiring Ryan as a special assistant and working with him when Ryan's farm teams were Astros' affiliates.

"I love the fact that Tim has worn a bunch of different hats," Daniels said. "He’s got great contacts, having been in minor league baseball and negotiated deals with major league teams, working with umpires, and as a longtime farm director, assistant GM and GM. I think we’ve got some impact development guys in our organization – coaches, scouts, trainers, strength coaches -- and he adds to that."

The Rangers considered filling the position internally, including adding it to assistant GM Thad Levine's duties. But the club decided that Levine was too valuable in his current role and didn't want to risk spreading him too thin.
