Notes: Mitch Moreland 'not far behind'

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland was in a good mood Wednesday. He had just returned from the batting cages and once again felt like he had a productive session with no pain in his right wrist.

Moreland had arthoscopic surgery on his wrist this offseason and was expected to come to camp behind the rest of the hitters. But Moreland has felt even better than he anticipated. He took live batting practice from manager Ron Washington on Tuesday and impressed the skipper by driving the ball to the opposite field.

"I feel really good and I feel like I'm only going to be behind by a couple of days," Moreland said.

The club isn't taking any chances. It has limited Moreland to 75 swings per day so he doesn't put too much pressure on the wrist too soon.

"It's just precautionary," Moreland said. "We don't want to push it. But I feel good and haven't had any issues."

Moreland said he took some grounders Tuesday as well and felt fine.

"I didn't do a whole lot, but it was good to get out there," Moreland said. "I don't feel like I'm behind much at all, and that's good."

Other notes:

* Just about every pitcher and catcher was in the clubhouse at some point when it was open to the media this morning. The only player I didn't see was Yorvit Torrealba. But as a veteran, he may wait until later today to report. And technically, he just has to be in the state of Arizona today. He doesn't have to come to camp until the workout tomorrow.

* Pitching coach Mike Maddux said the plan for Thursday is for every pitcher -- except Scott Feldman and Colby Lewis, who threw on Wednesday because they are slated to pitch in the first spring training game -- to throw a five-minute bullpen session followed by five minutes of live batting practice. That includes Yu Darvish, who will do so with plenty of cameras on him.

* Darvish will hold his first news conference of the spring Thursday afternoon. We'll give you all the updates on that at ESPNDallas.com.

* Nolan Ryan will talk to the media this afternoon. Stay tuned here on the blog for what he has to say about the Rangers as they attempt to work their way back to the World Series for a third consecutive season.
