SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers manager Ron Washington said third baseman Adrian Beltre is feeling fine but requested not to play in Thursday's intrasquad game.

"That's fine with me," Washington said. "He'll be ready for Sunday."

Sunday is the club's first Cactus League game against Kansas City, which shares the Surprise Recreation Campus with the Rangers.

Beltre, who dealt with a calf strain last spring, is on a program put together by strength and conditioning coach Jose Vazquez to help keep his legs healthy. Nelson Cruz is on the same program and part of that is doing some different drills on the field and off. But both players feel good.

Other notes:

* Manager Ron Washington continued his work with the utility infield candidates. Today, he spent time with Greg Miclat, working him out on a side field early this morning. Miclat and the rest of the utility infield possibilities will get some time in the intrasquad game. The regulars are expected to get two at-bats and play maybe four innings or so.

* Washington heaped praise on Colby Lewis during his chat with the media, noting that Lewis has shown his guts the past two seasons. That includes dealing with a hip problem for most of last season yet continuing to pitch and put up solid postseason numbers. Lewis will start today's intrasquad game.
