Injuries: Matt West ready to start rehab
"But all I can do is come in ready to work, ready to strengthen the area around it and be able to throw again when they tell me," West said.
The 23-year-old pitcher, who played third base up until the final week of spring training last year, said it wasn't one pitch that did it. He just felt some nagging pain in the elbow and the club thought he should get it checked out. An MRI revealed the sprain and the decision now is to rehab for six weeks because the doctors feel that part of the ligament can be rehabbed and hopefully avoid surgery for West.
"It's disappointing," West said. "I'm a big competitor and I can't compete right now. To tell me I can't go out there and try to get hitters out...I hate it. But I look at it as a small setback and I'll come through it."
Other injury notes:
* Catcher Yorvit Torrealba (illness) said he feels better today. He won't play in the Cactus League game, but might tomorrow.
* 1B/OF Brad Hawpe (right hamstring soreness) is hitting in the cages and doing some on-field activities that don't involve running. It may be another day or two before he attempts to run.
