SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Josh Hamilton has the fourth most plate appearances on the Rangers this spring, yet he has one of the worst batting averages.

He's 5-for-30 at the plate with eight strikeouts -- tied with Mitch Moreland for most on the team. He has just two RBIs.

But Hamilton isn't concerned.

"There’s not really any struggling in the spring," Hamilton said. "Spring is spring."

Hamilton wants to get to a point where he makes solid contact in a good hitting position. He's not trying to hit for power and it shows. He has just one extra-base hit.

"I prefer not to be hot during the spring and be hot during the season to save them, as you say," Hamilton said.

As he attempts to recognize pitches, Hamilton thinks the biggest difference from last spring is the change in hitting coaches. Scott Coolbaugh replaced Thad Bosley near the middle of last season. Hamilton said the team had to adapt to Bosley's style, but Coolbaugh knows the players' swings.

Coolbaugh worked his way up through the team's minor league system as a hitting coach and was taught by former hitting coaches Rudy Jaramillo and Clint Hurdle.

"He knows what to do and what not to do and we’re going to try our best from there," Hamilton said.

Hamilton said his approach is different every spring but the goal is the same: get your legs under you in time for Opening Day. He's building his body up where he can play nine innings when the season starts.

He was limited in the 2011 World Series with a sports hernia that he had surgically repaired in the offseason. Hamilton was on the disabled list after he suffered a broken arm on a head first slide into home plate on April 12.

Hamilton jammed his heel against the Oakland Athletics and left the game early last Thursday, but he didn't miss any more time because of it.

"Right now everything feels good," Hamilton said. "My body is starting to feel better, getting all the soreness out of the way."
