Colby Lewis not worried about hip

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Colby Lewis cringes every time his balky hip is brought up. And he isn't cringing from pain. Lewis just doesn't like to talk about it. He sees it as something he has to put up with and said it doesn't keep him from pitching and won't be an excuse for any bad outings, either.

"Why even talk about it?" Lewis said. "I just deal with it. It doesn't concern me."

Lewis, the 32-year-old veteran of the pitching staff and the club's Opening Day starter, said he's dealt with some sort of pain from the hip for six seasons now. He doesn't care what you call it -- degenerative hip condition or whatever -- and insists it won't keep him from going out and pitching. It certainly hasn't the past two seasons.

Lewis has been a workhorse on the staff, putting up at least 200 innings in 2010 and 2011, following two healthy and productive seasons for the Hiroshima Carp in Japan. Lewis probably would have gotten to 200 innings each of those seasons, but he was on a six-man rotation and made 26 and 28 starts, respectively.

"I've dealt with it and will deal with it as I have," Lewis said. "I don't even know what to call it. But I know how to deal with it."

Lewis has always walked with a unique gait since arriving in Texas (he says his brother even laughs at him about how he walks). This spring, along with all the pitchers, Lewis has continued to work on his fielding. And in his last start, he got off the mound quickly to cover first with no problems.

The veteran is flying under the radar a bit this spring, something he relishes. With all the discussion about Yu Darvish and Neftali Feliz's transition to the rotation, Lewis is going about his business. He's unassuming and prefers to get his work done quietly. He's doing that and says he's on track for the season. He has one more start to get him up to 100 pitches or so and then will dial it back in preparation for Opening Day.

"I'm happy with where I am," Lewis said. "I'm getting ready and have been able to throw all my pitches and do what I want to do."
