ARLINGTON, Texas -- At the end of his six innings of work that earned him the victory in the Rangers' season opener over the Chicago White Sox, Colby Lewis was smiling but was a little unsure of the future.

Not the immediate future, but long-term.

Lewis will make $3.2 million this season, but after that he doesn't have a contract. He is in the club option of a two-year deal and wants to play for the Rangers beyond this season.

"Yeah, that would be great," Lewis said. "If they don't want me, they don't want me. I have no idea what the situation is. I'm sure as the season progresses we'll see if I'm staying or I'm going."

The Rangers don't negotiate during the regular season and have curtailed serious talks with second baseman Ian Kinsler, who is seeking an extension.

Lewis is in an interesting situation. He's endured hip issues which gives the Rangers pause for a long-term deal, but he has pitched through his health issues.

Lewis went 14-10 last season with a 4.40 ERA in 32 starts.
