How's Hamilton: New deals don't affect talks

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan said Ian Kinsler's five-year, $75 million contract extension signed Wednesday doesn't affect any potential talks with outfielder Josh Hamilton.

In March, the Rangers also extended the contract of young pitcher Derek Holland. He signed a five-year extension that could keep him with the club until 2018. Holland is getting five years of the deal guaranteed at $28.5 million.

Hamilton is seeking a long-term deal, but the sides tabled talks after spring training. His off-the-field issues play a part in that somewhat, but it's clear the Rangers are interested in keeping him.

"You have to take each and every situation and player, that has to be viewed completely separately," Ryan said. "So just because what we did with Derek and what we've done with Ian does not mean that we'll do it with some other player. But certain key players we are certainly, are looking at, to try to figure out how we may be able to retain them."

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels wouldn't comment specifically when asked about Hamilton but didn't dismiss speaking with his agent or any other player for a new contract as long as it didn't present a distraction to the team or player during the regular season.

"I wouldn't rule it out," Daniels said. "But we're not going to talk about it. Our thought has always been not to negotiate during the season, but the reality is that what we're against are distractions, not necessarily the negotiations itself, and if we feel it will take away from the focus on the field then we won't. I'm not going to rule it out, but we're not going to talk about it."
