ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington was surprised to find a birthday cake when he went to the dugout for batting practice on Sunday night.

Washington turned 60 on Sunday and the Japanese media surprised him with a large cake and traditional red vest and hat. Kanreki is turning 60 in Japan and it's one of the big age landmarks. Washington wore a red Chan Chan Ko, a vest.

"It's tradition when you turn 60 years of age," said Carlos Yamazaki, one of the media members who helped plan the surprise. "He's been great to us."

Washington was clearly touched by the gesture. He normally celebrates his birthday with dinner out with his wife, Gerry.

"It was awesome," Washington said of the surprise.

He's enjoyed working with the Japanese media, who travel with the club and follow not only the Japanese players, but the Rangers as a whole.

"They've been very professional," Washington said. "I want them to feel free to ask questions and talk to me. That's what we do here."

Washington has no trepidation about turning 60.

"I feel the same I've felt," Washington said. "I feel like my energy level is the same. I still work out. I guess that's why I'm keeping my energy level."
