Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was named American League player of the month and Yu Darvish earned AL rookie of the month honors for April.

Hamilton, who turns 31 this month, led the league with nine homers, 25 RBIs, 64 total bases and a .744 slugging percentage and was second with a .395 batting average in 22 April games.

He was the fourth player in the AL since 1921 with at least nine homers, 25 RBIs, 20 runs and 34 hits in April. This is the fourth time Hamilton has won AL player of the month and his second in April. He won it in April 2008, his first year with the Rangers.

Darvish, 25, was 4-0 in five starts in his first month in the majors. He is tied for the lead league in wins and has a 2.18 ERA. He became the sixth rookie starter since 1957 to win at least four games without a loss in April.

Darvish is the third Ranger to win the AL rookie of the month award since it was first put in place in 2003, joining Gerald Laird in April 2004 and Neftali Feliz in September 2010.

It’s the first time the Rangers have won multiple AL awards in the same month.
