ARLINGTON, Texas -- Even though Michael Young isn't sure he needs a rest day, he understands what manager Ron Washington is doing. Young was told Tuesday that he'd have Wednesday off. That doesn't mean he'll sit around and relax. The idea is to give him a mental break and he can use the time to work on some things.

"I'll spend more time in the cage, take a few more ground balls," Young said. "I might get a workout in after BP. I don't get many days off, maybe a couple a year. I'll try to make it a useful day, get my work in and be ready to go tomorrow."

Young said he's going to keep plugging away at the plate as he fights through a slump. Young is hitting just .196 (18-for-92) in his last 22 games to drop from a season-high .414 to .280. That's his lowest batting average since April 11. In his last 48 at-bats, Young has just eight hits.

"There's time when you don't get results in this game, you've just got to keep staying focused on the fundamentals and stay focused on the fundamentals and keep chipping away at it," Young said. "Obviously, I'd rather be locked in for 162 games, but I love baseball when it's tough and when you get tested and challenged. Those are the parts I really enjoy."

Young said this is when the game becomes very mental.

"That's a part of the game I believe I excel at," Young said. "I look forward to those games and those stretches where I feel like once you pull out of it you make yourself a better player because of it."

Young isn't a guy that changes much. He believes in his approach. And why wouldn't he? His track record is solid.

"I make adjustments pitch to pitch and at-bat to at-bat, but I don't make any overhauls to my approach," Young said. "I'll stay with it and expect things to change and start going my way."

Other notes:

* Washington says he needs to get one more of his big guns a break, and that's Josh Hamilton. That could be Thursday's game against Oakland, but Washington hasn't decided yet.

* Yorvit Torrealba is catching Yu Darvish tonight. Washington said Mike Napoli has been "banged up" at catcher and wanted to get him out from behind the plate. Napoli is DHing.

* RHP Mike Adams said he feels better today. He said he had an ear infection and was battling some upper respiratory stuff, but that it's calmed down and he's better. "I'm not all the way back, but I'm better," Adams said. It won't stop him from pitching. He said he's ready to go.

* The Rangers are expecting sellouts tonight and tomorrow for midweek games against the Oakland A's.
