ARLINGTON, Texas -- The hours are numbered for the most famous mustache on the Texas Rangers' roster.

PODCAST
Rangers lefty Derek Holland talks about the thought process behind shaving his mustache.

Listen Listen
Derek Holland, who cut his hair prior to his previous start, plans on shaving his mustache Wednesday morning.

"I think it's gone long enough," Holland said. "It's had fun. I just want to get back and bring the baby face back out. Nothing's going to change. It's not going to affect my performance. I think it's time it slips off for a little bit, give it a little bit of a vacation. It will come back."

Holland said no one put him up to it. He just decided it was time for a change. So in the span of a less than a week, Holland has shaved the mullet (or whatever you call what was on his head) and now the mustache. Count me in on the side that approves of this decision.

"It's going to look totally different," Holland said. "That's why I'm going step by step. If I did it all at once, you guys would be blown away. You wouldn't even know if it was me at my locker. I had to do it one by one."

Holland said the clubhouse exploded when he walked in with short hair and that clearly his teammates were pleased he had cut it.

Some of the players wanted to get someone to shave the mustache, but Holland said he'll do it himself.

After cutting his hair, Holland pitched 7 1/3 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, giving up two runs on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. We'll see what he does with no mustache.
