Tempo is key for Matt Harrison
ARLINGTON, Texas-- At 8-3, Matt Harrison has the best record on the Texas Rangers pitching staff. He's hoping to continue that is success.
The 26-year-old southpaw is on a four-game winning streak, including a complete-game shutout against the San Francisco Giants on Friday. He has a 1.72 ERA in June, allowing nine hits and three walks through 15 2/3 innings in two starts.
"I think just a better tempo with my mechanics has been the biggest thing that's kept me going this well the whole time through each start," Harrison said. "It's always been a struggle for me to find a rhythm on the mound, and I think right now it's just to a point where I feel comfortable with it."
Harrison said he has been focusing on getting ahead of batters, keeping pitches down in the zone and getting strikes from off-speed pitches. He believes all of the above have contributed to his recent success.
His success could not have come at a better time, with three starting Rangers pitchers on the disabled list. The short-handed staff has forced Harrison to step into a bigger role, and he has shined.
"That's the way it goes sometimes, but right now we're just trying to maintain until we can get those guys back," Harrison said. "Hopefully we can keep our head above water and try to win as many ballgames as we can until they get healthy."
