Buzz: Koji Uehara says injury isn't serious
The latissimus dorsi is the muscle that surrounds the rib cage and extends to the arm pit. Uehara said he sustained the injury when he was pitching to Pablo Sandoval in the second game of the Rangers' series against the San Francisco Giants.
"I don't think it's that severe," Uehara said. "I'm pretty positive about the situation."
Uehara said the MRI showed a minor tear and that it should not keep him off the field long. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels reiterated that the injury was not that severe.
"My guess is a no-throw for two weeks," Daniels said. "It’s dependent on when he’s completely pain free and there is no discomfort."
Other notes:
* RHP Justin Grimm is being called up to the big leagues. The move, effective Saturday, will have the 23-year-old seeing his first major league action as a starting pitcher against the Houston Astros. Read more here.
*Neftali Feliz's time on the DL has been increased to 60 days. He is expect to return in late July.
*In honor of Joe Nathan's alma mater, the Rangers all wore Stony Brook hats and red shirts for batting practice before Thursday's game. The Stony Brook Seawolves will face UCLA in the first round of the College World Series on Friday. Nathan said the Seawolves didn't send him enough hats for the team and he's ordered some more. It was supposed to be mandatory for batting practice, but not everyone had a hat they could wear. Nathan hopes to get them in ASAP.
*Nelson Cruz is back in the starting lineup for Thursday's game after coming back from a virus. Read more here.
*Jon Daniels said that Derek Holland could throw Friday, meaning he could be ready for game action in around two weeks. Daniels said nothing is set in stone and it depends on how Holland feels.
*Craig Gentry will not start tonight despite playing particularly well lately. Ron Washington said as long as the starters are healthy, he would prefer to only use Gentry against left-handed pitchers.
"He's been taking total advantage of his opportunities," Washington said. "The kid's got a good skill set. Still, his role is to play center field against lefties, unless one of those guys like Cruz or Hamilton is out."
