Triple-A Round Rock left-handed pitcher Martin Perez will be called up to join the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, the team announced.

Perez, 21, is coming off one of his best starts of the season, going nine innings and allowing two runs on three hits Thursday. He walked two, struck out four and needed 90 pitches in the complete game. In his start before that, he pitched seven shutout innings. He is 5-5 with a 4.59 ERA in 15 starts for Round Rock this season.

The Rangers signed Perez, 21, as a free agent out of Venezuela in 2007. He entered 2012 as Baseball America's No. 31 minor league prospect.

The Rangers bypassed Perez when they made the move to bring Justin Grimm to the majors because Perez had been struggling with his fastball command. Grimm was needed because of a string of injuries to starters, including Neftali Feliz, Derek Holland and Alexi Ogando.

It isn’t known whose place Perez will take on the roster. Michael Kirkman threw 82 pitches in relief Monday night, making him unavailable for a few days, so it could be a move to replace him so the club has the extra arm.

Texas will also likely be without Mark Lowe against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. He tied a career-high with three innings pitched and said Monday he could maybe get one hitter out Tuesday if needed.

Perez would give the club someone who can go multiple innings, joining Scott Feldman, who is also available for long relief. Grimm lasted just one inning plus two hitters in Monday's 8-2 loss to the Tigers. As of Monday night, manager Ron Washington said Grimm was scheduled to make his next start, though if that changes, Feldman (or possibly Perez) could slide in there.

Perez and his agent, Felix Olivo, apparently broke the news on Twitter last night, though their accounts have not been verified.
