Martin Perez felt good despite uneven debut
Perez couldn't finish the inning, retiring two hitters while allowing two hits, four runs (one earned) and one walk with one strikeout and a wild pitch. Mike Adams closed out the inning after Perez was pulled.
Although his debut may not have been as jaw-dropping as Justin Grimm's earlier this month, Perez said that he felt great overall about his performance.
"I have to work a little bit on my control because I left some pitches up," Perez said. "I trust what I can do. I trust my pitches and I trust my teammates.”
Manager Ron Washington said he was pleased overall with Perez's first outing.
"He probably had some nerves working," Washington said. "I'd certainly like to see him come and get his three outs, but that just didn't happen. At least he got his chance to get on the mound. He tried to keep the ball down. Once again, his opportunity was against a pretty good hitting offense. At least he got a chance to get in the game, and we'll see where he goes from there."
The Rangers have not yet named a starter for Saturday's game against the Oakland A's, but Grimm and Perez are both in the running. Perez said that he is more concerned with improving than being named the starter.
"I'm not worried about it," he said. "I have to come here every day and learn something. If they give me a chance to start Saturday, I’ll be ready, but I have to be working every day so I can do what they want me to do.”
