Buzz: Ogando, Uehara close to return

SEATTLE -- Rangers manager Ron Washington said there's a possibility relievers Alexi Ogando and Koji Uehara will be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.

Ogando pitched two scoreless innings in Triple-A Saturday. He allowed one hit and struck out three batters. Out of the 26 pitches he threw, 18 were strikes.

Uehara threw 24 pitches in an inning of work, giving up one hit and striking out a batter.

"We haven’t totally committed to that, but it’s possible both of them could be here Tuesday," Washington said.

Ogando was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an injured groin. Uehara is on the DL with a right lat muscle strain. Washington said he's cautious about Uehara's injury and if the reliever needs another rehab outing, it would be for Double-A Frisco.

"That injury is strange, but he threw the ball well," Washington said of Uehara. "He loaded up the strike zone. His live (batting practice) session he threw the ball well, so there’s a possibility he’s good."

Whenever both players return, Washington said they will have the same duties prior to their injuries. That includes multiple innings from Ogando, if necessary.

"We might use Koji and Ogando in some eighth-inning situations sometimes when (pitchers Mike Adams and Joe Nathan) are not available. Those will be the guys that go eight and nine."

Other notes:

Catcher Yorvit Torrealba will not be with the Texas Rangers during their two-game series against the Athletics in Oakland starting Tuesday because his wife is expecting a baby.

Torrealba will fly to be with his wife in the Miami area after Sunday's game, but he is expected to return to the team Friday for the start of a weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif.

Catcher Mike Napoli is expected to return Tuesday after he left Friday's game against the Seattle Mariners with a bruised right quad muscle. He did not play in Saturday's game and was out of Sunday's starting lineup.
