Matchup: Roy Oswalt vs. Bartolo Colon
Following a day off, the Texas Rangers will continue their march through their division with a matchup against the Oakland Athletics. Roy Oswalt will start things off for the Rangers during the two-game series in Oakland. Bartolo Colon will take the mound for the Athletics. Here’s the matchup:
Oswalt (2-1, 6.26 ERA): Oswalt will make his fifth start of the season Monday. The 34-year-old took a no-decision in last start against the Minnesota Twins on July 8. He allowed one run on a season-low five hits and threw 102 pitches in 5 2/3 innings in the Rangers’ 4-3 win in 13 innings. He’s allowed just one home run in four starts this season. Oswalt is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA against the Athletics in two career starts. The loss occurred in his only start at O.co Coliseum on June 7, 2002. He gave up four earned runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Colon (6-7, 3.80): This will be Colon’s third start since he strained his right oblique muscle against the San Diego Padres on June 17. Since his return from the 15-day disabled list, Colon has a 1.23 ERA in two starts (against the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners). He’s 18-6 with a 3.61 ERA in his career against the Rangers. Colon picked up the win in his only start against the Rangers this season on June 6 in Oakland. He pitched eight scoreless innings in the A’s 2-0 win.
Hitters: The Rangers have a .289 batting average and a .480 slugging percentage against Colon. …Michael Young is 16-of-45 (.356) against Colon. … Adrian Beltre is 17-of-54 (.315) with four home runs and 13 RBIs. …Josh Hamilton is 1-for-5 against Colon, and Nelson Cruz is 0-for-7 with three strikeouts.
Oswalt has only faced four batters on the A’s roster. Seth Smith is 2-for-9 with two strikeouts and Brandon Moss is 1-for-8 with three strikeouts. … Adam Rosales struck out in both at-bats against Oswalt. … Jonny Gomes walked in his only plate appearance against the right-hander.
