The Texas Rangers made the trade for Geovany Soto official Tuesday morning. The Rangers receive the catcher from the Chicago Cubs along with cash considerations for minor-league pitcher Jacob Brigham and a player to be named or cash.

To make room for Soto, catcher Yorvit Torrealba has been designated for assignment. Soto is expected to be in uniform in time for Tuesday's game with the Los Angeles Angels.

"We're excited to add Geovany to our club," said general manager Jon Daniels in a club's new release about the deal. “He's a talented guy we think can contribute to what we're hoping to accomplish. We also want to thank Yorvit for his work here over the past two seasons."

The 29-year-old Soto has been with the Cubs his entire big league career (starting in 2005) and was an All-Star and National League rookie of the year in 2008. This season, he's batting .199 with six homers and 14 RBIs in 52 games. He missed about a month with a torn mensiscus in his left knee from mid-May to mid-June, but has played better since returning. He is hitting .298 (14-for-47) in his last 14 games.
