Buzz: Mike Napoli 'not fully there yet' on basepaths

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Mike Napoli still isn’t ready to run all-out on the bases. Until he crosses that hurdle, Napoli won’t be catching for the Rangers.

Napoli, recovering from a left quadriceps strain, worked out Thursday at Kauffman Stadium and didn’t feel comfortable taking it to full-throttle mode.

“I’m not fully there yet,” Napoli said. The last one (going first to third), I felt a little bit.”

Napoli said Thursday’s workout was the most positive he has had since going on the disabled list. But he knows he has to be patient with the process so that he doesn’t suffer a setback and risk being out for the year.

Manager Ron Washington watched Napoli’s workout and said the catcher had no issues with anything other than the all-out running.

“We just have to get him past running the bases,” Washington said. “It’s just moving slow. With his footwork and throwing down to second base, there were no issues. It’s the first time he decided to get on the basepaths and we just have to push him past that. Once he gets past the issues on the basepaths, I think he’ll be ready for action.”

Other notes:

-- Reliever Robbie Ross rejoined the club and has been cleared to throw. Ross is on the DL with a left forearm strain.

-- When Alexi Ogando, Mike Adams and Joe Nathan all allowed runs Wednesday, it marked the first time that has happened in 2012.

-- With a Thursday night game in Kansas City and a one-hour time change, the Rangers weren’t scheduled to land in Tampa until 4:45 a.m. ET. Texas opens a three-game series against the Rays on Friday night.
