OAKLAND, Calif. -- Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre will not play the field in today's game as his sprained left shoulder remains sore.

Beltre said it's still bothering him, saying it "pinches" him when he lifts his left arm above parallel. Beltre told manager Ron Washington he could play, but the manager didn't want to take any chances.

"It was a quick turnaround," Washington said. "He took some grounders yesterday and looked good, but with limited sleep and a game this quickly, I wanted to give him another day. He'll be ready for the playoffs."

The shoulder impacts him some swinging the bat, too. He said he isn't taking full swings (it hasn't kept him from hitting some balls hard, including a double in Tuesday's game).

"It's a little better than it was," Beltre said. "I'm making adjustments. It's not something that will keep me from playing defense in the playoffs."

With Beltre as the DH, Michael Young will be at third base. Mike Napoli plays first with Geovany Soto behind the plate to catch Ryan Dempster.
