The 31-year-old Hottovy (pronounced HAWT-uh-vee), was designated for assignment by the Royals last Friday. He made nine relief appearances for Kansas City in 2012 and was 0-0 with a 2.89 ERA (three earned runs in 9 1/3 innings). He spent most of the season at Triple-A Omaha, going 2-2 with a 2.52 ERA and seven saves in 41 outings. Opponents hit just .221 against him in the minors last year.
The Rangers have some open spots in the bullpen and will likely go to spring training with a gaggle of candidates to sort through the options.
