Rangers acquire RHP Cory Burns

November, 28, 2012
The Texas Rangers have traded for right-handed reliever Cory Burns, sending the San Diego Padres a player to be named later or cash considerations, the club announced. ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick was the first to report the deal. Burns means the Rangers now have 39 players on the 40-man roster.

Richard Durrett joins Ben and Skin for Rangers hot stove chatter and to take a shot at what the team could look like next season.

Burns, 25, made his big league debut in 2012 with the San Diego Padres, pitching in 17 games in relief (18 innings). He had a 5.50 ERA and gave up 26 hits. He had 18 strikeouts and 10 walks. He was designated for assignment by the Padres on Nov. 20.

Before his brief chance in the majors, Burns was in Triple-A Tucson and was 1-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 54 games (66 innings). He had 78 strikeouts to only 17 walks and opponents hit .205 against him. He gives the club another bullpen option they can evaluate in spring training.

More on Burns from the Rangers' release:

Originally selected by Cleveland in the eighth round of the 2009 June draft, Burns was acquired by San Diego in a December 16, 2011 trade with the Indians for outfielder Aaron Cunningham. He has averaged over 10.0 strikeouts-per-9 innings in each of his 4 minor league seasons and owns a career .980 WHIP figure in the minors, pitching exclusively in relief. In 2011, Burns was named Double-A Relief Pitcher of the Year by MLB.com after recording 35 saves for Akron in the Eastern League. He had a career-high 42 saves spanning two levels in the Cleveland organization in 2010, which ranked 2nd among all minor league pitchers that year.
