NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said he leaves baseball's winter meetings without getting any major deals "across the finish line" but did get a clearer picture of how he hopes to assemble his 2013 team.

Daniels has kept the lines of communication open with representatives for Zack Greinke and Josh Hamilton, the two biggest free agents on the market.

Daniels and his crew spent time exploring the trade market for outfielder Justin Upton and checked in on starting pitchers, including James Shields. They also talked about trading Michael Young, though a big hurdle in that deal remains -- whether the veteran infielder will waive his no-trade clause.

But as the Rangers headed out of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center on Thursday afternoon, nothing on any of those fronts was resolved yet.

"I think we have a sense of a couple of things that are possible and hopefully we'll be able to advance the ball there," Daniels said. "I feel like we have a better sense of what's real and what's not. We want to make deals. We don't want to sit here every day and talk about the idea of making deals. It just hasn't happened yet."
