Arizona GM says club 'in no rush' to trade
Towers says there's nothing that's close enough to where "we're going to pull the trigger in the next 24 to 48 hours."
"But at least in these meetings we had a chance to talk to, or at least engage, the target clubs that we thought we had the best matches with – either directly or indirectly, more indirectly," Towers said. "And I think that things could change, too. We’re in no huge rush. Our team, as it is right now, we have no voids. We’re in no rush to do anything.
"The clubs that we’ve been talking to, either directly or indirectly, are probably in a little more hurry than we are. So we may sit and just kind of wait. Some of these other free-agent signings may change the landscape of how people feel about our players in trades. That’s kind of where we’re at."
Like many GMs at the meetings, Towers is waiting to see what Zack Greinke or Josh Hamilton will do. If Greinke goes to the Rangers, it could make Texas more inclined to do a deal for Upton with Arizona. Perhaps if Hamilton signs with the Rangers, they'd be a bit less inclined, though there's no question the Rangers have interest in Upton.
"I think everybody has a better idea of everybody’s threshold of what they possibly would do," Towers said. "So they’re probably going back to ownership, going back to their scouts once again, and deciding, is this something you want to do or not do?"
Towers said he won't put a deadline on anything just to get something done right away.
"That’s just not the way I do business," Towers said. "It’s something some people do, where you say, 'Hey, we’re fine.' You never know. Things change. Landscapes change. Even in spring training, somebody goes down with an ankle injury. Hey, this is the business. It’s tough. I certainly understand that kids, wives are affected by rumors and things that are out there. But it happens. You deal with it. Some people deal with it better than others. But it kind of goes with the territory."
