Notes: Colby Lewis rehabbing, feels good
AP Photo/Paul SancyaColby Lewis said his rehab is going well but that he's not going to try to push it and come back too soon.Lewis is long tossing from 120 feet and will slowly progress up to probably 150 or 160 feet before he's ready to go on a mound. Once he throws off the mound, he'll get an even better idea of how his arm is responding (it's the day after throwing that is the real indicator of how it feels).
"I just want to get back here healthy and try to contribute in whatever way I can," Lewis said. "Hopefully, it’s in the rotation. I think my body is going to tell me when I’m ready. I think my arm is going to tell me when I’m ready."
He could be back at some point in May or June, but he isn't setting any timetable.
"I don’t want to push the issue and come back too soon and not be ready for the push," Lewis said.
Other notes from this morning:
* Derek Holland and Matt Harrison both threw bullpen sessions this morning, which pitching coach Mike Maddux has listed as "Day 0," since official workouts don't begin until Wednesday. Holland had thrown about eight bullpens before Tuesday because he has to be ready to pitch three innings before he pitches in the World Baseball Classic. Both players look good and seem genuinely excited to get things going.
* Frost was on the ground early this morning, which delayed some of the pitchers from getting out and going through their routines. Yu Darvish was among them, as he had a light throwing session and will throw a bullpen on Wednesday. Darvish is expected to speak to the media for the first time Wednesday.
* The clubhouse was open for the first time and it's always fun to see where guys are stationed. There is some thought put into where the lockers are so young players can get the benefit of some veteran experience.
Jurickson Profar is between Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus in that corner. Leury Garcia is over there, too. None of the four are in camp yet, however.
Ian Kinsler is here and he's got Michael Young's old locker, which was right by the back entrance of the clubhouse. Mitch Moreland is beside him, and both of them were working out Tuesday. Joe Nathan, as he did last year, has the spot on the other side of that entrance.
