The Rangers try to win three out of four at Seattle when they send rookie right-hander Nick Tepesch to the mound Sunday afternoon in the Pacific Northwest against Mariners right-hander Brandon Maurer. First pitch is 3:10 p.m. on FSSW and 660-AM.
Tepesch (1-0, 1.23): Tepesch was brilliant in his first Major League start, allowing a run in 7 1/3 innings ... He became the 14th pitcher in Rangers history to win as a start in his Major League debut ... Tepesch had his sinker jumping against the Rays, getting 15 ground ball outs, two of them coming on a double play ... He allowed four hits and had five strikeouts ... The 14th-round draft pick in the 2010 draft showed the mound presence and poise that scouts have raved about as he is has risen in Rangers' farm system.
Maurer (0-2, 16.20): Maurer's Major League career is off to a tough start ... He didn't make it out of the first inning in his second big league start last Tuesday against Houston, getting just two outs and giving up six runs on seven hits ... Maurer dominated in Double-A last season with a 3.20 ERA, 117 strikeouts and 48 walks ... He's an aggressive pitcher who can run his fastball up to the plate at 94 mph ... He also throws a slider and a curve ball ... Maurer has a reputation for trying to be too fine but he only has one walk in 6 2/3 innings to start the season ... He's given up 15 hits, including two home runs.
Hitters: It's the first start against their opponent for both pitchers.
