BOSTON -- Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre was held out of Tuesday's series opener against Boston as he continues to deal with a tight left hamstring.

Beltre said the hamstring issue has lingered throughout this season. He expects to play Wednesday against the Red Sox.

He jogged on the outside part of the infield before the game and said the hamstring felt "good enough." When asked if he needed a stint on the 15-day disabled list, Beltre said no.

"Not for this just now, no," Beltre said. "They're trying to be cautious by giving me the day off."

Beltre tried to talk his way into Tuesday's lineup, manager Ron Washington said, but it didn't work this time.

"He's ready to go," Washington said. "But we decided to give him an extra day."

The Rangers have a weekend series at Toronto, and Beltre likely will be limited to DH duties in two games because of the artificial turf at the Rogers Centre.

Beltre, who hit .376 for May with six home runs and 23 RBIs, came out of the game after the ninth inning of Saturday's 4-1 loss in 10 innings to Kansas City. Beltre said he tweaked the injury in the fourth inning running the bases.
