First night back a hit for Manny Ramirez
ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Manny Ramirez admitted he was nervous as he went to the plate for his first at-bat Sunday night for Triple-A Round Rock.
"He got some good hacks in tonight," said Express manager Bobby Jones, whose Round Rock team beat Omaha 4-0 behind seven strong innings from starter Jake Brigham.
Ramirez finished the night 1-for-3 with a walk. He saw 13 pitches, including a seven-pitch walk in the eighth inning. It was more of a vintage Ramirez at-bat.
He looked more like Josh Hamilton or former Boston teammate Nomar Garciaparra swinging at the first pitch in his first two at-bats.
"He had good at-bats," Round Rock hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh said. "It's all about him trusting himself to put himself into a good hitting position. That way he can get in position and use his hands."
Ramirez had a tough first-night assignment going up against Omaha right-hander Yordano Ventura, who was throwing 100-mph fastballs and also had a nice mix of breaking pitches.
Ramirez also grounded out and struck out. He was happy with the first night, but not completely satisfied.
"It's going to take time," Ramirez said. "Not everything is going to come in one day."
