Nathan applauds MLB for cleaning up game
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Count Texas Rangers closer Joe Nathan among those who praised Major League Baseball on Monday for taking a strong stand against performance-enhancing drugs.
|Richard Durrett is mad about the Ryan Braun situation and goes on an epic rant about why he's so upset with the suspended Milwaukee Brewers slugger. |
"We have to weed out the guys that are doing stuff that shouldn't be in this game," Nathan said. "We want this game clean. We want this game played on a level playing field and the process is working. This definitely lets guys know that if you're going to do something you're going to get caught. The program is working."
Braun's suspension includes the final 65 games of the Brewers' season and any potential postseason games this year. As a result, Braun will lose $3.25 million.
"It's unfortunate for the players," Nathan said. "But if you're going to take a risk like that, you're going to get caught."
Nathan, a six-time All-Star, made it clear Monday he doesn't like what these scandals do to the game.
"It's never good when this happens," Nathan said. "That's why it's so frustrating for the many of us, the majority of us that are doing it the right way. It's frustrating to have players that take a risk like this. It does put a scar on this game. We just hope the fans are patient and realize we're doing this for the right reason, and they're many, many more of us who are doing it the right way than the few who aren't."
Nathan and his teammates are aware that Texas right fielder Nelson Cruz is linked to the Miami-based Biogenenis clinic that also has ties to Braun.
"I'm not going to sit here and act like I know anything about it," Nathan said. "I'm not going to talk about anything I don't know anything about."
