Shouldn't every aspiring manager be interested in the Detroit Tigers' job? After all, you've got a solid pitching staff, a lineup with pop and an organization that's one of the best in the league.

Jim Leyland's decision to retire means that job is open, and the Tigers are busy putting together a list of candidates. One name mentioned, at least by the media, is Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux.

He was reached by Mlive.com on Thursday and said that while the Tigers have not contacted him, he'd certainly listen if they did.

"I'd absolutely be interested," Maddux told MLive.com. "I'd be flattered."

Maddux, 52, has done a terrific job with the Rangers' pitchers since 2009. His name surfaced a few years back for the openings with the Cubs and Red Sox, but he withdrew consideration to stay in Texas near his daughters. But he appears ready to manage now and should get some consideration.

"They've got a spectacular rotation with a 1-2 punch that keeps you on your toes," Maddux said of the Tigers in the report. "They're good in the bullpen. They've got youth in between. Jim Leyland has put them in a position to succeed."
