ARLINGTON, Texas -- As general manager Jon Daniels said during a news conference, Martin Perez's contract works for both sides. He gets security and the Rangers get the benefit of some cost certainty on a player that has big upside at just 23 years old.
Here's how Perez's contract breaks down:
2014: 1 million signing bonus and a $750,000 salary
2015: $1 million
2016: $2.9 million
2017: $4.4 million
Club option on 2018: $6 million or $2.45 million buyout
Club option on 2019: $7.5 million or $750,000 buyout
Club option on 2020: $9 million or $250,000 buyout
So as the option year salaries increase, the buyout decreases. But with the signing bonus, the salaries over the four years and the buyout on the first option year, Perez is guaranteed $12.5 million.
What's not to like about this deal from a Rangers perspective? It's club friendly and allows them to keep Perez through the first two years of his free agency period if they choose.
