Brian McCann terms too much for Rangers

One of the biggest names in the free agent pool this offseason has picked a new team.

Catcher Brian McCann has agreed to a five-year deal worth $85 million with a vesting option for sixth year at $100 million with the Yankees, pending a physical, according to a source.

Those weren't the kind of terms the Rangers were willing to offer the catcher. Texas really liked McCann, but not when the bidding reached those levels, a source said Saturday.

It’s been a busy week in baseball with the short week next week and just a few weeks before the start of the winter meetings. There was a thought that a top free agent like McCann might wait until going to Orlando next month before signing, but he got the deal he wanted and agreed to it.

But the fact that the Rangers traded for Prince Fielder and intend for him to be the starting first baseman also altered the club’s need to pay big bucks on a long-term deal for McCann. They still need a catcher in addition to Geovany Soto, but could decide to find a short-term deal (like they did last year) and buy some more time for Jorge Alfaro, who could be ready in 2015 or 2016.

Texas still needs a left fielder and could choose to spend much of their remaining offseason funds on an offensive spark at that position. The club has interest in outfielders Carlos Beltran, Nate McLouth and Shin-Soo Choo.
