Rangers trade McGuiness for RHP Mikolas

The Texas Rangers acquired right-handed pitcher Miles Mikolas from the Pittsburgh Pirates in return for first baseman Chris McGuiness on Monday.

McGuiness was designated for assignment on Friday when Shin-Soo Choo was officially added to the roster. Mikloas goes on the 40-man roster, meaning outfielder Rafael Ortega has been DFA'd.

Mikolas, 25, spent most of the 2013 season with Triple-A Tuscon (San Diego Padres organization) and was 4-2 with a 3.25 ERA in 54 games. He was third in the Pacific Coast League with 26 saves. He had four brief stints in the big leagues with the Padres and put up 1 2/3 scoreless innings in two appearances in 2013. He made his big league debut in 2011 and was 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 25 games. He was taken in the seventh round of the 2009 draft and has only pitched in relief in his four pro seasons.
