How 2011 ended still bugs Michael Young
"I'm over it, but I'm not over it," Young said, echoing the feelings of many Texas Rangers fans.
Young said the club was "steamrolling" through the playoffs in 2011 and felt very good about their chances of winning the franchise's first championship. But Game 6, considered by many as one of the greatest finishes to any World Series game, still bothers him. The Rangers were one strike away from the title twice before falling in 11 innings. They went on to lose Game 7 and haven't won a playoff game since, falling in the AL wild-card game in 2012 and losing in Game 163 last season.
“I know there are no rings, but that was a championship team,” Young said.
It was the second straight World Series appearance and came after the Rangers lost in five games to the San Francisco Giants.
"In 2010, I felt like we just got outplayed," Young said. "We ran into a scorching hot team. In 2011, I mean no disrespect by it, but they (the Cardinals) have a great team too, but we were better. Flat out. I can say that now that I’m retired."
Young was smiling at that one, but he said he was "honored" to play with that group of players and felt like that team was "on a mission." It just didn't end the way he wanted.
