Darvish not worried about thumb

4/14/2014

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish said he isn't concerned about the cut on his right thumb and is looking forward to going up against Seattle Mariners ace and former Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez on Wednesday.

Darvish cut the thumb with the fingernail on his ring finger during his most recent start, although it didn't keep him from going deep into that game. He hasn't allowed a run in 15 innings this season.

“Even when I was throwing, it didn't hurt me,” Darvish said through a translator Monday. “I've done this so many times that probably the nerve isn't working anymore, so it didn't hurt me at all.”

Darvish was asked about facing Hernandez and joked that he plans on trying to hit his two-seam fastball. He added that he considers Hernandez “one of the top three pitchers in the big leagues.”

Darvish isn't worried about the lack of run support he has received. The Rangers didn't score a run for him in his last start, a 1-0 win in extra innings Friday over the Houston Astros.

“It goes both ways,” Darvish said. “When I have a lot of run support, I relax too much. That’s not good.”
