Carp starting; Gimenez on paternity leave

8/4/2014

The Texas Rangers added outfielder Mike Carp to the active 25-man roster Monday. Carp takes the roster spot of catcher Chris Gimenez, who has been placed on paternity leave.

Carp, 28, was received by the Rangers on Sunday on a waiver claim from the Boston Red Sox. He is in the starting lineup tonight, making his Texas debut. Carp batted .198 (17-86) with no homers and nine RBIs in 42 games with Boston this season. The left-handed batter was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Friday. Carp is a career .260 hitter with 27 home runs and 123 RBIs over 301 major league games with Seattle (2009-12) and Boston (2013-14), playing primarily first base and left field.

Gimenez has batted .262 with no home runs and 11 RBIs in 34 games with Texas this season. He is the first Rangers player to go on the paternity list since Michael Young did Aug. 24-27, 2012.

Left-handed pitcher Ryan Feierabend, who was designated for assignment Friday, has been assigned outright to Triple-A Round Rock. He compiled no record and a 6.14 ERA in six relief outings after having his contract purchased from Round Rock on July 12.
