ROUND ROCK, Texas -- The Texas Rangers' top catching prospect, Jorge Alfaro, was promoted Double-A Frisco on Monday.

Alfaro, 21, moved from Advanced-A Myrtle Beach where he hit .261 with 13 home runs, 73 RBIs and 63 runs scored.

Alfaro was named the Carolina League’s Player of the Week after hitting.400 with a .720 slugging percentage.

He joins slugger and Rangers' top prospect Joey Gallo at Frisco.

At the start of the season, Alfaro was MLB.com and Baseball America’s second-best minor league prospect in the Rangers organization and ranked among the Top 100 prospects overall.

ESPN’s Keith Law has Alfaro ranked No. 31 overall.

“There's still a substantial amount of upside here -- a catcher who can hit 20-25 homers a year and shut down the running game is a star even with a low .300s OBP -- but I'd like to see more consistent progress in his game,” Law said of his ranking of Alfaro.

Also, the Rangers promoted outfielder Nomar Mazara to Frisco and left-handed pitcher Alex Claudio to Triple-A.

Calvin Watkins joined ESPNDallas.com in September 2009. He's covered the Cowboys since 2006 and also has covered colleges, boxing and high school sports.
