Mound matchup: Feldman vs. Romero

By Josh Davis

The Rangers and Blue Jays will continue their series Saturday at 12:07 CT at the Rogers Centre in Toronto with RHP Scott Feldman going against LHP Ricky Romero. Here’s a brief look at the matchup:

Feldman (1-3, 5.84 ERA): The 27-year-old last pitched four innings of a 6-4 Texas win over Kansas City May 9. In that game Feldman gave up six hits, four earned runs and a home run. He has allowed 11 doubles this year, which is tied for 14th-most in the American League and is the most of any Rangers’ pitcher. Feldman has not stuck out more than four batters in any appearance this year. A few more K’s Saturday might make his road record more palatable. In two road starts this year, Feldman has lasted only 9.1 innings and has a 10.61 ERA.

Romero (3-1, 3.42 ERA): The 25-year-old is 4th in the AL in strikeouts (47), but 7th in walks (20). Romero has also been a double dispenser this season, allowing 12 which is tied for 12th-most in the AL. In his last game, Romero went 5.1 innings against the White Sox and gave up eight hits and four earned runs, but did manage seven strikeouts. Romero has played best at home, where he has a 2.46 ERA, allowing just six earned runs in 22 innings of work. He has struck out 24 batters to just eight walks at home as well. BTW, Romero started very hot to the season, but has cooled off. Check out these numbers from ESPN Stats & Information:

1st 4 games: 1.80 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 7.5 innings per start
Last 3 games: 6.23 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, 5.8 innings per start

Hitters: The Blue Jays have had little success hitting against Feldman with one notable exception. Adam Lind is 5-10 with three home runs and five RBIs against the righty, but Lyle Overbay, John Buck and Aaron Hill have combined to go just 6-33 vs. Feldman. The Rangers have had some success against Romero, but it hasn’t come at the top of the order. Elvis Andrus and Michael Young are a combined 0-9 with two strikeouts against the left hander. However, Vladimir Guerrero is 5-6 against Romero. David Murphy are both 3-6 against him.
