Mound matchup: Lewis vs. Garcia
By Richard Durrett
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Rangers take on the White Sox at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington tonight. RHP Colby Lewis goes up against RHP Freddy Garcia. Let's take a quick look at the matchups:
Lewis (7-5, 3.28 ERA): Lewis got two extra days' rest because of the off day and the decision to pitch Omar Beltre on Wednesday (in Lewis' normal spot) against the Angels. The 30-year-old will also make one fewer start before the All-Star break, hopefully to give him a bit of a rest. He took the loss against the Astros last week, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits in five innings. That came after he had tossed a complete game, 2-hitter against the Astros on June 19. Lewis is 3-1 witha 2.48 ERA in his last four starts and opponents are hitting just .200 against him, lowest in the AL. He is 1-3 with a 8.31 ERA in six games (four starts) against the White Sox.
Garcia (8-3, 4.66 ERA): The 34-year-old gave up two runs on eight hits in seven innings in a win against the Cubs last week. He has quality starts in five of his last six outings and has pitched exactly seven innings in all of those. He's been efficient, needing more than 100 pitches only once in that span. One of those quality starts was a 4-3 victory over the Rangers on June 3. Garcia gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits in seven innings in the win.
Hitters: Bengie Molina, who is expected to start, is 12-for-37 against Garcia lifetime with three homers and six RBIs. Michael Young is 11-for-38 against him and Vladimir Guerrero is 5-for-20. Ian Kinsler is still looking for his first hit off Garcia, going 0-for-8. The White Sox have struggled as a team against Lewis. A.J. Pierzynski and Paul Konerko are a combined 5-for-25 against Lewis.
